Change agents, sponsors, self-managing teams and systems

Ideally, leaders committed to “knowledge leadership” can be effective change agents in organisations. Such leaders can appropriate, translate or transpose knowledge to their own environment. Another necessary factor is the acceptance of the client organisation that there is a problem and to make a decision to identify and correct it. The essential nature of O/D is to create a “helping relationship” in which the change agent helps the organisation to identify and resolve their problem by using multidisciplinary knowledge from psychology, sociology, anthropology, behavioural economics, communication and business administration theory through action research. This involves preliminary diagnosis, data collection, feedback, data exploration, and action planning and action deployment.

Organisation development deals with the organisation as a system with subsystems or parts (groups, structures, norms, values, outputs) with interconnections to external environments. All elements are viewed as interdependent.

Organisation development also focusses on total culture and cultural processes within the organisation, with the group considered as the key influence on individuals and personalities.

One effective way to engage groups is to enable them to become “self-managing”. This empowers the group to set, control, use feedback and decide everything about that group from who is hired, to how the workday is organised and how much people are paid.
